Commissioners: I note that this proposal mentions nothing about the purpose of the consolidation, so you have no idea about the intended use of these combined properties. I say to you that I do have an idea as to the probable use of the buildings, and it's not good.
For the past several months, residents of the neighborhood surrounding these buildings have been harassed, frightened, threatened by the activities of Exhale Hookah Lounge at 405 N. Market, owned by the individual(s) who owns 401 and 403 N. Market as well. The venue at 405 is an unregulated, unaccountable establishment that advertises a BYOB policy which enables patrons to drink to excess. They then spill out into the streets for afterparties which disrupt the neighborhood. A month or so ago an individual was shot during one of these events. Allowing the property owner to combine the three buildings into one will, undoubtedly, lead to a three-fold expansion of this unlicensed, unregulated venue.
I beg city planners, leaders and commissioners to deny this consolidation application. While I fully expect that the response to me will be "that's not in our remit" and "we can only follow the rules and guidelines," I say to you, follow the guidance of your good sense and your commitment to your neighbors and community. Figure out a way to assert some authority over the goings on in your/our City. Where there's a will there's a way.
