Dear City Council, my name is Malcolm Furgol and I live in Tasker's Chance in the city of Frederick. My comments here reflect both my viewpoint as Executive Director for the Coalition for a Healthier Frederick County and as a city resident, voter and home owner.
The Coalition has been working in partnership with the Frederick Housing Solutions Task Force for over a year to address the inadequate affordable housing supply in our county as one of the identified community health priorities in the most recently completed Community Health Needs Assessment.
We are excited about the work of the Mayor’s task force to work in partnership with Frederick Housing Solutions Task Force on many of its goals, including its work with faith leaders to expand affordable housing on church/house of worship property.
The Frederick Housing Solutions Task Force has been meeting with faith leaders for over a year to create a vehicle for engagement and capacity building and are now launching a Faith & Housing Initiative. This initiative is aimed at achieving the development of deeply affordable housing units through an Accelerator program in collaboration with Concrete Solutions Inc. This project is ready to launch and already has seven to eight houses of worship committed to participating. About half of these houses of worship are located within the city of Frederick. As the Frederick Housing Solutions Task Force implements this initiative, we welcome and encourage the city’s support.
